Super Bowl and Football Musings

February 4th, 2008 · No Comments

Some Guy Caves football thoughts and rantings because the Super Bowl and football…well, they’re important topics to us guys.

Ah…the Super Bowl. The Giants pull the “shocker” and walk away with the Lombardi trophy. All is right in the football universe and balance is restored…the 72 Miami Dolphins are still the only residents of Perfectville. Mercury Morris is STILL happy as hell today!!

What happened though? How could an 18-0 football team not be the world champion of the sport?

Duh…you have to actually win the championship game!!

The 18-0 is for chumps because the good ol’ Pats are now 18-1 and there ain’t a Super Bowl ring in site! Poor old Patriots – already crowned champions – coronation complete – but they didn’t manage to win the damn Super Bowl. All the football gurus will pontificate on the whys but let’s distill this down: they got whipped at the line of scrimmage. When that happens – you WILL NOT WIN!!

Which brings out this little rant:

I live smack in the middle of big-time college football land here in South Carolina. I annually get to laugh at all the arguments about who should play for the BCS national championship (which seems to always revolve around the SEC and the Georgia Bulldogs).

Laughter is normally my response.

Why?

How can a bunch of sportswriters and coaches armed with a virtual ballot box decide who the best teams are? They can’t, of course. Football games are ONLY won or lost on the field. Novel concept, huh?

So I nod and laugh and say college football should be just like the NFL. The ONLY purpose of the regular season is to make it to the postseason. Period. And…if a team somehow manages to get to postseason play they can by God win a championship – and it sure is hell ain’t a mythical championship!!

Because if the NFL was big-time college football, the 10-6 regular season Giants would NOT have been in the Super Bowl. But thankfully, the NFL isn’t big-time college football, so we have a real champion…a champion who PLAYED their way to game and then won the game on the field. No votes involved.

Hey college football – there’s this thing called COMPETITION – the sport of football is not an election!!
